The Legend: This 350-year-old temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name "Mukteshwar" translates to "God of Salvation" (Mukti + Ishwar). Local lore suggests that Shiva granted a demon immortality here after a fierce battle.
The View: Perched at 2,312 meters, the temple offers a breathtaking 180-degree panorama of the Great Himalayas, including the majestic Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli peaks. Historical Note: It is believed that the Pandavas built a temple here during their exile to seek liberation.
Chauli Ki Jali: Adjacent to the temple, these unique overhanging cliffs are a paradise for adrenaline junkies. It’s the go-to spot for rock climbing, rappelling, and paragliding.
Bhalu Gaad Waterfall: A hidden 60-foot gem reached via a 2km trek through dense oak and pine forests.
The Green Canopy: Mukteshwar is famous for its fruit orchards (apples, plums, and peaches) and a 15-square-mile forest of Deodar (Himalayan Cedar).
IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute): Established in 1893, this campus features colonial-style architecture. It houses a library with gold-plated books and a museum showcasing early scientific instruments used by Nobel laureate Robert Koch.
The PWD Guest House: A heritage bungalow where the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett frequently stayed during his hunts for man-eaters.
